What To Watch This November
Dead Wax - Stream it on Shudder
Shudder, a tv service which deals exclusively in horror is one of my favourites. You can always rely on it for cult classics, indie slashers and obscure vintage tv shows. Lately they’ve been releasing a lot more original content and this has got to be one of my favourite horror series in a while. Each episode is only 10 - 15 mins long so it works out more like a collection of short films which create a movie long season. Starring Hannah Gross (Mindhunter / The Sinner) on a journey to uncover 4 records steeped in myth and mystery. A really cool soundtrack and visual style.
Mandy - Showing in selected cinemas
Where do I even begin? I had some reservations about this film at first purely because i’ll never be able to forgive Nicholas Cage for that hatchet job remake of The Wicker Man. Cage usually delivers an unnecessarily intense performance and sometimes that can make his characters seem comical when they’re probably not meant to be. But for once, that level of acting fit perfectly for this story. The film is your classic revenge horror, quite literally on acid. The visual style looks as though someone spliced David Lynch, Dario Argento and Stanley Kubrick together. And well it’s got it all; demon bikers, a cult, 70s science fiction and a medieval level of retribution. Like I said, I had my reservations but I stand to be pleasantly surprised by this one.
Channel Zero - The Dream Door
Okay so you all may be detecting a theme here - I clearly love horror. I have always enjoyed Channel Zero purely because I find it stays clear or tiresome horror tropes and usually gets creative with it’s story lines. As far as horror anthology series go, it’s up there with the best.
